Summer is almost here and that means festival season is about to get underway in earnest. There are plenty of great events in Houston this May – From Cinco de Mayo celebrations, to music festivals and don’t forget BBQ, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this month in Houston.

Blues and More at the Brown

Whether you are looking to do a mid-day activity with your kids, or just need a respite from the office. Head to Avenida Houston’s ‘Blues and More at the Brown’ select afternoons to take in the sounds of local Houston musicians.

 

Looking to grab a bite while you enjoy the show? Stop by several restaurants just steps way for a tasty takeout meal: Grotto, Kulture, Biggio’s, Walker Street Kitchen, Pappasito’s, Pappadeux’s and more. Yes, this is the perfect way to do lunch.

 

Water Works Festival

The City of Houston’s WaterWorks Education Center is pleased to announce the 26th Annual WaterWorks Festival scheduled for Friday, May 3, 2019, from 9 AM to 12 PM at Levy Park. This year's theme is "Careers in STREAM" based on Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math.

 

The event is expected to draw over 50 sponsors and exhibitors sharing a variety of careers in both the public and private water and waste water sectors.  The event will also educate the community regarding the City’s high-quality drinking water, our drinking water supply and treatment system, water conservation and efficiency initiatives, waste water treatment system, Corral the Grease Program and other sanitary sewer overflow prevention methods.

 

Dragon Boat Festival

When: May 4th, 2019

The Texas Dragon Boat Association has fulfilled its mission over the years by hosting dragon boating festivals during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, featuring cultural performances, food, and artisans. Due to the popularity of this event in May in downtown Houston, we added a second event in October. Initially that event (the Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta) was held in Clear Lake, but it was moved in 2008 to Sugar Land, TX.

 

Cinco de Mayo

When: May 5th, 2019

Where: Discovery Green

Houston, TX

 

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Discovery Green with ballet folklorico by Nueva Luna, HSPVA Mariachis and more performances. Bombón’s La Comadre (Mel Gomez) and DJ Gracie Chavez will emcee.

 

Rails and Tails Mudbug Festival

When: May 4th, 2019

Where: 1907 Railroad Depot Museum

201 South Elm Street

Tomball, TX

 

This day long tribute to the tasty crawfish will feature music from the Allen Oldies Band, The Powell Brothers, Bayou Roux, Phineus Reb and others. Food and merchandise vendors, kids’ zone, live crawfish racing and more. Admission and parking are free.

 

Comicpalooza 2019

When: May 10th– 12th, 2019

Where: George R Brown Convention Center

Comicpalooza 2019 is kicked into high gear and on track to bring you a great show! We look forward to bringing you living legends, industry icons, creative geniuses, space cowboys, and scientific marvels! From May 10-12, the pop culture festival will open its doors again at the George R. Brown Convention Center welcoming celebrity guests like Emilia Clarke, known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen, the mother of dragons, on HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones and joining Emilia is Nathalie Emmanuel, Daenerys’s trusted advisor; Grant Gustin from the Flash, whose time with us we hope won’t go by too quick, and John Wesley Shipp, the original Flash; Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, and Wilson Cruz, who all take us boldly where no man has gone before; Peter Serafinowicz who makes us all laugh with his role on Amazon’s The Tick; John Barrowman who you recognize from many hit television shows such as Doctor Who, Arrow, The Flash, and Torchwood, just to name a few; and Billy Zane who we love, but can’t help but despise on Titanic, a legendary movie that will go down in history.

 

Returning events include the Crossplay competition on Friday night, the popular Cosplay competition on Saturday night, and the adorable Kid’s Cosplay competition on Sunday afternoon; a literature festival filled with authors, workshops, and round table discussions; comic book guests, publishers, and retailers; a film festival that will feature short films; and entertainment that includes ice sculpting with power tools, dance, songs, and laughs. And, there will be so much more!

 

Houston Crawfish Crab Grill Festival

When: May 11th, 2019

Where: Humble Civic Center & Arena

Bring some lawn chairs if you plan on spending the day at the festival. It’s easy to fall in love with the flavor of crawfish and eat your weight in potatoes, corn, sausage, crab, kabobs, and other grilled dishes. You might need to rest a little and take a break before moving on to other vendors, and a festival is designed to introduce you to the crawfish community. So bring a chair, order a beer, and make friends with the people next to you.

 

Asiafest 2019

Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at AsiaFest! An international bazaar, performances, arts and crafts, fusion cuisine, and live demonstrations await at Asia Society Texas Center's annual festival.
