Tips on Decorating your Home for the Holidays

Thanksgiving is behind us, but we still have more holidays to look forward to in the coming months. For some the idea of decorating the home for the holidays is a happy one, while others tend to look at it as a chore. No matter which end of the spectrum you fall on, or if it’s somewhere in-between, decorating your home doesn’t need to be overwhelming. You can decorate as much, or as little, as you like. Simply stringing a few lights throughout the house can help to brighten an otherwise dark room.

Here are some tips and ideas for easy DIY holiday decor for the winter months.

Serve it up – use a platter and fill it with monochromatic ornaments for a stunning table centerpiece. Want a more whimsical look? Then go for multi colored ornaments and string some battery powered LED lights through them. Spruce it up even more by placing tree trimmings under the ornaments for extra color and wonderful aroma.

Fill your cup – use different styles and sizes of cups and glasses and fill them with ornaments, ribbons or scented pine cones for a festive look on the mantle or bookcase.

Hang it with care – use cookie cutter or ice box cookies to decorate the tree or to brighten up windows. Before baking cookies be sure to poke a small hole at the top of these beautiful holiday stained glass cookies.

Tie it up – get out and enjoy this beautiful weather by taking a walk in the woods. While you’re out there gather up similar sized twigs to string together for a stunning front door decoration. Gather twigs and add eucalyptus or other greens for a pop of color. Secure with red velvet ribbon and hang on the door. Easy to make and make a great hostess gift too!

Show it off – display all of those holiday cards on a bright and cheerful card display you and the kids can make in an afternoon. Click here for instructions and ideas on Pinterest.

Keep it simple – decorating doesn’t have to be all out extravagance. A little goes a long way. Use clear glass bowls to highlight your favorite ornaments or consider decorating your tree with only one color and style of ornament for a stand out look that really catches the eye.

No matter how you decorate this year, or if you don’t at all, remember it’s about what makes you happy this season. For some it’s spending time with family and friends while putting up the tree or setting the table for the big meal. For others the joy of being together is enough and decorations aren’t necessary. Do what makes you happy and enjoy the season!
