Known for his smooth style, weaving together elements of funk, R&B, rock and electric jazz, keyboardist Jeff Lorber helped pioneer the post fusion sound of contemporary jazz. Wine & Food Week 2019

Sonic Playground

Sonic Playground: Yuri Suzuki aims to surprise and delight visitors to Discovery Green’s temporary playground on the Sarofim Picnic Lawn. Consisting of several objects that twist, modify, and transmit sound in unusual and playful ways, Sonic Playground allows for serendipitous audible experiences with other visitors to create a sense of community and play.

Sonic Playground was created by Yuri Suzuki (Japanese, born 1980), a sound artist, designer, and electronic musician whose work blurs the borders between design, technology, and sound. He established Yuri Suzuki Design Studio, based in London, in 2013. Sonic Playground: Yuri Suzuki is organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.

Thursday Concerts Presented by University of Houston – Downtown

Featuring Marshall Crenshaw (Smart Pop & Roots Rock)

These free, family-friendly concerts showcase the best music of the Gulf Coast. Performers, times, dates, and other schedule changes may occur. Blankets, pets (on leashes), and picnics are welcome and encouraged. Lawn chairs are allowed on the north side of the hill. Food, beer and wine are available for purchase at The Lake House; glass containers or outside alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the park.

Party in the Park Concert & Indie Artist Showcase

Summer Celebration is the largest African American consumer tradeshow and festival in the south. The annual event attracts 20,000 attendees from Texas and surrounding areas as well as over 200 vendors and scores of corporate sponsors. The 4-day experience includes a lineup of top celebrity entertainers, influential speakers, business development seminars, health and wellness exhibits, hair shows, women’s forums, concert performances and more.

For 16 years, this landmark event has been produced by Texas Black Expo, Inc. – a non-profit organization that aims to stimulate growth and development within urban communities by strengthening businesses, inspiring youth, and building better lives.

Blacksmithing Sample Class

When: June 15th, 2019

Looking to get your feet wet with some basic blacksmithing skills? This introductory class is geared toward beginners and is a shorter take on our 7-hour class. We will cover fire-building and maintenance, shop safety, tools, equipment and hammer control. Students will get hands-on experience while working on a small project they will be able to take home.

Participants must wear cotton or wool clothing (no synthetic materials) and closed-toe shoes. Students also must bring their own eye and ear protection. Costs of materials are included in the cost of class.

An Evening with John Cusack & Screening of Say Anything

When: June 16th, 2019

The 1989 comedy/drama “Say Anything” brought popular culture the love story of Lloyd Dobler (actor John Cusack) and Diane Court (actress Ione Skye). An eternal optimist seeks the heart of a “brain trapped in the body of a game show hostess.” Ranked by Entertainment Weekly as one of the greatest modern movie romances (and #11 on the list of 50 best high-school movies), “Say Anything” made a star out of John Cusack who went on to success in multiple films including “High Fidelity,” “Grosse Point Blank,” and “Being John Malkovich,” among others.

Now, join John Cusack for a screening of “Say Anything” followed by a LIVE conversation regarding his career and the making of “Say Anything.” Roger Ebert called the movie “one of the best films of the year” when it was released. Fans will now get the opportunity to experience a moderated discussion, with John answering audience questions as well.

Rainbow on the Green

Land Rover Houston Central's 10th Annual Rainbow on the Green® presented by Legacy Community Health - Montrose returns Friday, June 21 for this FREE annual city-wide LGBT celebration at Discovery Green with electrifying entertainment by Chad Michaels and OneUp, along with some of Houston’s best drag performers.

Chad Michaels rose to the top of RuPaul's Drag Race in 2012, and was the first person to be inducted into the "Drag Queen Hall of Fame" after dedicating 20 years to the exciting art of celebrity impersonation. His famous tribute to Cher has earned him international acclaim.

OneUp is made up of Adam Bastien and Jerome Bell. After showing off their vocals during an audition on The Voice, they competed for Kelly Clarkson's team.

Love, celebrate and dance at Discovery Green! Music by DJ Joe Ross. Derrick Shore, co-host of Houston Life at KPRC will emcee. Be sure to arrive early, you don't want to miss any of the opening acts!
