New Year’s Resolutions for the Home

The New Year is just a few days away, there’s still time to make some New Year’s Resolutions for the Home. No matter if you live in a town house or a single family home, there are some wonderful things you can do right now to make living in your home more enjoyable.

Maintenance – Whether you live in a brand new home or one that is 100 years old, there’s always maintenance that need to be done. Even if you live in a condo or have an HOA, you’re going to need to do some general upkeep. Think of your home like your computer – when an update comes out it’s best to do the update because there’s usually a security patch as part of the update. Make sure your smoke detectors are in perfect working order. Make sure their batteries are fresh and test the device each month. Same goes for CO2 detectors. Change air filters in your HVAC system to breathe easier.

Keep it Clean – Unless you have a housekeeper you’re probably spending a fair amount of time on the weekends cleaning your home. If that works for your schedule keep at it, but a better way might be to do a little each day. Don’t wait until things are out of control to tackle cleaning the house, instead make and keep a schedule of the cleaning chores and assign everyone in the house an appropriate and fair share of the load.

Declutter – You might not be able to move into a tiny house, but getting rid of the stuff you don’t need and don’t use is a wonderful way to feel relaxed in your own home. Get rid of piles of magazines and newspapers. Get rid of the bills that you still get in the mail (why are you still getting bills in the mail?) by going online and going digital. Think before purchasing that nick nack or latest gadget that you probably don’t need.

Get Organized – Now that the holidays are about over, but you still have all the decorations out, get them organized. Put holiday decorations in a box or plastic bin that is packed well and labeled correctly. Actually write down the inventory of the box so you can spend less time looking for aunt Edna’s favorite Christmas ornament. Start organizing the junk drawers. Do one each weekend until you only have one junk drawer left and then go through it each month.

Consider Make-Ahead Meals – Many families have found it difficult to eat dinner together because there never seems to be enough time to make a meal at home. Consider making make-ahead meals once a week or once a month so all you have to do is pull the meal out of the freezer, heat and enjoy!

These are just some suggestions for New Year’s Resolutions for the Home but any improvement is a great way to go when it comes to home.

Have a Happy New Year!
